RE: Fuel Economy

If your getting 9-10 towing with the 6.2, there is no way your getting another couple MPG over that towing with a 6.6 My guess is at best you will be about the same MPG, just a lot more solid towing experience. What you would notice is that the 6.6 isn't near as responsive as the 6.2 is. So the "fun" factor will not be what your used to (if that matters). My brother has a '22 Denali with the 6.6 gas, and unloaded he gets around 14-15 mpg. I don't see you only losing a couple mpg towing, regardless of what you hooked to.

RE: New and Old Skins

I just got a set of Toyo RT Trails put on my '24 3500 today. They sure look good, hope they run good.

RE: New and Old Skins

I didn't know that. I assumed the OEM just selected an already manufactured tire design. I guess that would explain why the Bridgestone doesn't match anything else out there. It also explains why some tires on a new vehicle don't last near as long generally as those purchased off the shelf. The downside is that a poorly performing tire (that came with the truck) with the same name, creates a distaste for that tire that probably doesn't go away.

RE: New and Old Skins

My Chevy 3500 came with Michelin AT2. I am getting real tires put on tomorrow.

RE: 3.0L Duramax teardown

It won't be long before this engine goes the way of 3.0 Ecodiesel and Power Stroke. If it does, it wasn't because it hasn't been a good engine. I think it is still around because of how good it is. GM went to the effort of updating it recently, had they planned to kill it, it would have made sense to kill it prior to spending the money to update it. That said, I am not saying that GM and everyone else doesn't spend money in a seeming moronic way sometimes. I think the EPA and politics have more play in what stays and what goes these days. It seems like the EV winds are changing somewhat from the promises made a several years ago. So maybe it will stay for a while.

RE: I'm curious to know what you would do?

LOL! You kill me! I think I suggested just getting a '24 to start with. My '24 is in and I pick it up in a couple days.

Yes, that is the one. I must have screwed up the link.

RE: I'm curious to know what you would do?

Gale Banks has an interesting You Tube video on the '24 Duramax. It speaks to how the truck cannot utilize its max torque capability, except in very limited situations where the truck can stay in first gear. Perhaps the situation is similar in the HO. It has the "potential" to achieve it's power rating but not really achievable in most driving situations. He talks about the torque rise capability and how important that number really is. Your the man when comes to figuring all that out, but after seeing that video, I immediately thought of the HO's run up the IKE as an explanation of why it's run was pretty average considering the spec sheet. The '24 Duramax hp/torque rating is probably understated like the '20 Powerstroke was. Yes it might be, I don't recall the numbers, but the parasitic loss through the drivetrain seemed really low to me, suggesting that it's making more power than advertised or they have figured out how to lessen the loss running through the drivetrain.

If the HO run up the IKE is the way they all run, I don't think it is worth the money. However, perhaps the resale value of having that option would come close to paying for itself.

RE: I'm curious to know what you would do?

For as often as you trade, I think getting a '24 makes the most sense. The '23 your about to get will be in a couple months or since the '24's are already out, it already is, a year old (depends on if your going by calender year). You lose one year's deprecation for a couple months worth of use. I personally try never to get a new vehicle within the last six months of the current model year. Since you trade as often as you do, it would seem to be even more important. I ordered a '24 that is supposedly being built (I do have a VIN number now I guess), assuming it comes in December, I will get a full year's use before I depreciate due to model year. I do the same thing with heavy equipment.

RE: Looking at used 2023 Chevy HD 2500, Duramax

I would run the VIN past the service dept and see what has been done to it. They should give you a print out of all the work that has been done to it. It is still under bumper to bumper warranty so I am sure if it was a problem truck that there would be an easy paper trail to follow.

RE: Looking at used 2023 Chevy HD 2500, Duramax

That seems like a great deal (assuming it is as it appears) if the extra cab thing works, I would be all over that. I just ordered a '24 CC 3500 Dmax LTZ and it was 82K. I think it goes to show how important crew cab is on resale. Not everyone needs a crew cab but resale alone can justify one.

RE: Auxiliary lights

I have aux LED lighting on my business 3500 DRW with a flat bed. Spot lights on the side and a bar light across the back. I used Rigid. They have been installed for three years now. No issues, all the bulbs still work and they are bright. I have not used the cheaper brands, maybe they are just as good but its a work truck and especially in the Fall, Winter and Spring there is a lack of daylight here and when you need light, I need them to work. We fix equipment, load trailers with them and so forth, so while expensive, well worth the money.

RE: Truck was totaled, looking at GM 6.6 Gasser

The 10 speed in a gas makes a lot sense. What never made any sense was not offering the 10 speed with that when they released the 6.6 gas.

RE: Silverado 1500 Diesel - First impressions

I know GM was hoping for a 10% take rate on the baby Dmax, I am not sure what they currently are at, but they are offering it in more trimlines than ever before. You could take that as either they are giving you more options to have that engine to get more people to buy it, or it's so popular that people are demanding it in more trimlines. I agree probably regardless of the take rate, that this could disappear at anytime. I think from a spec standpoint they really hit the sweet spot. Right amount of hp, torque, killer mpg and it seems pretty dang dependable. See a lot of them around here between contractors and farmers primarily it seems.

RE: Help identify high volume truck dealers

what I've found over the years is that dealer "size" seems to have no correlation to vehicle out the door after hagling price. Next, if the dealer doesn't have the vehicle you want on the lot, they likely can get it if there is another dealer within a few states nearby that has it. When we were looking for our 2015.5 Denali, in Oreogn, WA, north CA, Idaho there was ONE that had what we wanted when I did a search. The local dealer, working with my broker got me that truck for less than what that "high volume dealer" quoted me, even after taking into account the broker fee. Truck ended up being shipped to the local dealer from where I expected it would come from, that "high volume lowest price" dealer in idaho. I have found the same thing to be true. Dave Smith used to be a force that other dealers had to contend with. Especially in Idaho (that said I am a 10 hour drive to Kellogg). I have not found that to be true anymore. If you call a Dave Smith, and get a quote, take to another dealer and you will likely get the same price or by the time you get yourself to Kellogg, its the same price. All that said. I wanted to order a '24 AT4 in the new Slate Grey. I called a GMC dealer 45 miles away from me that I have bought a 5500, 3500 and a 1500 from in the past. They would only sell at full MSRP. I told them that aint gonna happen. I went to my local Chevy dealer and ordered the CC DMAX LTZ in Slate Grey at dealer invoice (I have a good relationship with them). The moral of the story is someone, somewhere will not let your deal go to someone else. You just may need the price from a Dave Smith to compel them to at least match it.

RE: Tow truck ideas / advice

I was personally on the just fix it band wagon, until you said it had almost 400K on it and you don't need the people carrying capacity anymore. All that said, I would get out of it, unless you want to pay for an engine rebuild, and whatever else it takes to fix the steering. Those old 7.3's will go along time, but they wear out just like everything else. Get a crew cab pickup. I know diesel in Cali sucks to buy, but the GM half ton diesel would pull what you need and you would get killer MPG when not towing.

RE: Ram 2500 6.4 gas Towing 5th wheel.

22 mpg out of 3/4 ton hemi? What does fuelly.com post? 14 unloaded? Your posting 22 mpg, a half ton hemi doesn't reliably get that. I think you forgot to "carry the one" doing the math. Even in a place with no hills and at sea level, your not reliably getting 22 mpg. Short of being pulled by a tow truck, that aint happening.
